Chinese robotics startup Matrix Robotics on Monday unveiled its latest humanoid robot, MATRIX-3, a physically intelligent machine that the company says combines bionic design, dexterous manipulation, and generalized physical artificial intelligence (AI), signaling a step toward household and commercial applications beyond industrial settings.
According to the company, MATRIX-3 is designed to perceive the real world, interpret human intent, and execute complex operations autonomously, moving beyond traditional robotics that rely on preset instructions or software-level reasoning. The robot reflects a systematic overhaul of algorithms, hardware, and applications, aiming to create a safe, versatile, and human-compatible physical intelligence platform.
Matrix Robotics highlighted three core areas of innovation in MATRIX-3 that it says redefine the boundaries of physical intelligence in robotics.
The first is bionic design and sensory innovation. The robot features a 3D woven bionic skin integrated with a multidimensional tactile sensor network capable of detecting contact location and force in real time. Each fingertip contains ultra-sensitive sensors that perceive micro-force changes as small as 0.1 newtons, enabling delicate interaction with humans and fragile objects.
Coupled with a large-scale pre-trained spatial perception model and advanced visual system, MATRIX-3 can fuse visual and tactile data, allowing it to “see” and “feel” simultaneously. This enables precise manipulation of unstructured items such as flexible materials, glassware, or electronics, according to the company.
The second breakthrough is dexterous manipulation and human-like mobility. MATRIX-3 is equipped with the “Lingxi Hand,” featuring 27 degrees of freedom, and a “Bionic Super Joint” system that provides high power density, low noise, and precise actuation. The tendon-driven hand structure closely mimics human movement, enabling tasks such as tool operation, instrument handling, and object folding with exceptional accuracy.
Full-body motion is driven by a general motion control model trained on large-scale human motion capture and video datasets, allowing MATRIX-3 to walk, turn, and navigate uneven terrain with fluid, natural postures, the company said.
The third area of innovation is cognitive core and zero-shot generalization. MATRIX-3’s neural network AI brain can adapt to new tasks and environments without extensive retraining, enabling it to autonomously plan grasping strategies, avoid obstacles, and dynamically adjust force and posture in real time. The robot can perform complex hand-eye coordination tasks in unfamiliar scenarios, expanding potential deployment across commercial, industrial, and household contexts.
Matrix Robotics was founded by Zhang Haixing, the former founding leader of Tesla China Design and Research Center. Zhang has more than 20 years of experience in product R&D, design, and technology entrepreneurship in consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and AI. He holds over 100 patents and has received international design awards, including the German Red Dot Award, Japan’s GOOD DESIGN AWARD, and the CES Innovation Award.
Zhang previously contributed to Tesla’s humanoid robot Optimus, autonomous robotaxi, electric vehicles, and smart charging infrastructure. According to the company, he applied lessons from Tesla to redefine dexterous hand engineering and humanoid robot body design, culminating in MATRIX-3.
“The development philosophy behind MATRIX-3 is to enable robots to integrate naturally and safely into human environments,” Zhang said. “Our goal is not to replicate humans, but to create a new ‘species’ capable of performing heavy, dangerous, or repetitive work, freeing human creativity for more valuable pursuits. Today, we have taken a solid step toward that future.”
Matrix Robotics said MATRIX-3 establishes a new hardware and software platform standard for large-scale deployment of humanoid robots in commercial services, high-end manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and household applications. The robot moves beyond concept prototypes to function as an intelligent agent capable of interacting in human-centered physical spaces.
The company plans to invest in a benchmark production line for physical intelligent robots, with large-scale manufacturing of MATRIX-3 expected in the second half of 2026. An early access program is currently open to select industry partners, aiming to pilot the robot in commercial scenarios and foster a development ecosystem for physical AI robots.
Industry analysts said the launch highlights China’s growing ambition in general-purpose humanoid robotics. “MATRIX-3 combines advanced tactile perception, dexterous manipulation, and AI reasoning, which could accelerate the adoption of robots outside traditional industrial settings,” said Li Wei, an independent robotics consultant based in Beijing.
As robotics companies worldwide race to bring humanoid machines into everyday use, Matrix Robotics’ MATRIX-3 represents a notable attempt to blend mechanical design, sensory perception, and cognitive AI, potentially bridging the gap between experimental prototypes and practical applications.
